Rafiki Relay for Education - Cairo to Cape Town
Multiple dates from Monday, March 29th, 2021 to Monday, April 26th, 2021
Join our amazing Cairo to Capetown challenge, as we collectively run, walk, swim, or cycle a whopping 13,222 km between us in 6 weeks! Open to all ages and abilities! You choose your distance, and whether you want to get ‘on your marks’ with a team of up to 5 or go it ‘solo’. Enter as a family, a group of friends, a team of colleagues, anything goes! Schools can also enter!
Our collective progress will be tracked through our live, interactive map on our challenge platform. You upload your distance automatically from your fitness tracker or manually. As our journey progresses we will reach 12 milestone landmarks of exceptional interest and beauty – e.g. the Valley of the Kings and Victoria Falls. Find all the information about the relay and the incredible impact you can have by taking part, on our relay event website!
13,222 km is a huge challenge, and we will only succeed in reaching Cape Town in 6 weeks if we have lots of people taking part – so we would love you to join in. You will be in great company! Cerebral Palsy England International Footballer Harry Baker will be running up his kilometres as part of his England training! Harry is joined in supporting our relay by Olympic gold medallist Tim Foster MBE, Mara Yamauchi the 2nd fastest ever female GB marathon runner and Amar Latif the Blind Adventurer (of recent Celebrity Masterchef fame)!
Our Relay event page will open for registration from 29th March, and you have 4 weeks to rally support before you join us ‘in Cairo’ on the 26th April for our 6 week challenge!
Our aim is to offer a fun and inclusive opportunity to increase physical and emotional well-being in these challenging times. We want our relay to spread joy, encourage fitness, a feeling of personal and collective achievement and friendly competitiveness. However, our main reason for hosting this relay is to enable us to empower more young lives through education and your support will be life transforming for the young people supported by our educational programmes in Kenya, Uganda and Lesotho.
Rafiki Thabo believe that a lack of hope and education is true poverty, and our vision is that young people, including those living with disabilities, will be empowered through education to fulfil their potential and initiate positive change in their communities.
We do this by enabling access to education through scholarships for disadvantaged young people in Kenya, Uganda and Lesotho who otherwise would not be able to afford the secondary school or university fees. We also support education infrastructure such as dormitories to keep the students safe and a school meals programme for the poorest students at our link schools. With an education, these young people can break themselves and their families out of poverty, realise their dreams and in turn help others! We will invite you to read more on our website https://rafiki-foundation.org.uk/ and look us up on social media!
We want this to be a fully inclusive event, so it is free to enter. All we ask is that participants pledge to raise (or donate) a minimum of £5 each, which is the cost to Rafiki Thabo for each participant. Everyone who raises £10 or more will receive a Rafiki Relay for Education medal. For every £20 a participant raises they will receive an entry into our prize draw!
We do hope you will join us and that you will take the opportunity to fundraise for us, your support will help us transform lives!
